So how does one get from making great beer to breeding innovative plants? It's a more natural transition than you might think, particularly when the owners of a global beer and spirits company have a true passion for flowers.
In 1989, breeding research was already being done to produce improved hops for brewing. Purely as a sideline, a team of scientists at Suntory -- that's right, the Japanese brewing and distilling company -- began collecting wild plant species and breeding them with cultivated varieties to improve bloomtime, bud count, and garden vigor. The result was the first-ever spreading Petunia in the world, the amazing Petunia Surfinia®.
And that was just the beginning! Responsible for some of the most innovative breakthroughs of recent years, these passionate plantsmen are now at the forefront producing robust, floriferous, annual plants that outperform all others in the home garden. For Spring 2008 we are excited to offer you more than 48 of Suntory's individual varieties, plus 12 stunning Suntory Collections.
Here at Park we're not only in love with Suntory's superior breeding but also their company philosophy, because it's a spirit we happen to share: "Resonating with People and Nature."
I believe we can all raise a glass to that.
