Zinnia My Lucky Ladies

Everett Wallace, Jr. and Melody Wagner pose with their Zinnias and Guinness World Record CertificatesThe tallest plants in a rainbow of colors!
An heirloom variety grown by Guinness Book record holder Everett Wallace Jr. of North Carolina, this is a zinnia that tries to keep up with the sunflowers. Zinnia My Lucky Ladies reaches 3 to 5 feet in height and spreads to about 20 inches. Both double and single 3- to 5-inch blooms display bright shades of pink, red, orange, and white on thick, sturdy stems. Wallace trained one plant to reach over 12 feet! He inherited the heirloom seeds from his mother, some of which had been passed down for more than 50 years.

Cut-Flower Growing Tips
Zinnia elegans is not only one of the easiest annuals to grow but it comes in a rainbow of colors, sizes, and bloom types. In addition, it attracts butterflies and will often self-sow. Thriving in the sun and heat of summer, zinnias are outstanding in beds, borders, and containers. The more flowers you cut, the quicker you get new buds, so fill your vases! Give zinnias well-drained soil and water at ground level with a soaker hose or early in the day so foliage will dry quickly. Space plants far apart to provide good air circulation.
